Animal Kingdom

The most beautiful park in Orlando, and the easiest to do without paying extra

3 min read · Checked Mon 27 Jul
  • Flight of Passage at rope drop, and the rest of the day looks after itself.
  • The park where you can most safely skip Lightning Lane and save the money.
  • Do the safari early — the animals hide once it's hot, and by noon it's 36°C.

The shape of the day

Animal Kingdom is the best-looking park in Orlando — genuinely, properly beautiful, with landscaping that other parks don't attempt. It also has fewer rides than the others, which turns out to be a feature: it's the one park where you can have a complete day without a plan or a paid queue skip.

Three-quarters of a day is right for most families. It closes earlier than the other parks.

Rope drop

  1. Avatar Flight of Passage. Not negotiable. It's a two-hour wait by 10am and a 20-minute wait at opening, and it remains one of the two or three best ride experiences on earth.
  2. Kilimanjaro Safaris, immediately after — and this one is about the animals, not the queue. They're active and visible in the cool of the morning and asleep in the shade by 11am. The same ride is a completely different experience at 9am and 2pm.

That's the whole plan. Everything else here can be walked onto for most of the day.

Lightning Lane

This is the park to skip it. Outside Flight of Passage, waits rarely exceed 40 minutes. Expedition Everest has a single rider queue that's usually under 10 minutes. Na'vi River Journey is the only other one that builds, and it's a gentle boat ride that isn't worth a booking.

Rope drop Flight of Passage, use single rider for Everest, and put the money towards Hollywood Studios instead.

The thing most people miss

The walking trails. Maharajah Jungle Trek and the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail are not rides, have no queues, and contain tigers and gorillas at close range in genuinely excellent enclosures. They are the best thing in the park and most guests walk straight past them chasing a wait time.

Same for Discovery Island Trails around the Tree of Life — a five-minute detour that almost nobody takes.

When it storms

Animal Kingdom is the worst park in Orlando for a downpour. It's a park built around outdoor trails and open-air queues, and the indoor capacity is genuinely thin — the list below will be short.

The plan for a wet afternoon here is different: leave. It's the park with the earliest close and the least to do under cover, so a 2pm storm is a good reason to go back to the pool and call it a day. Alternatively, It's Tough to be a Bug and the Festival of the Lion King show are indoors and will absorb an hour between them.

Food

  • Satu'li Canteen (Pandora) — the best quick service at Walt Disney World, not just this park. The bowls are good, properly seasoned food and not a chicken nugget in sight.
  • Yak & Yeti — reliable table service, and rarely fully booked.
  • Flame Tree Barbecue — decent, and the hidden seating out the back overlooks the water and is the quietest place in the park to eat.

The evening

If you're staying late, Pandora after dark is the reason. The bioluminescent planting genuinely glows and the whole land transforms. It's a fifteen-minute walk that justifies staying until close on its own.
