Universal Studios Florida

Diagon Alley, screen rides, and the better half of the Hogwarts Express

2 min read · Checked Mon 27 Jul
  • Diagon Alley is the best-realised themed environment in Orlando. Go there first.
  • Heavy on simulator rides — take that seriously if anyone gets motion sick.
  • You need a park-to-park ticket to ride the Hogwarts Express. Get one.

The shape of the day

Universal Studios Florida is the studio-backlot park: screen-based rides, a lot of intellectual property, and one extraordinary piece of world-building in Diagon Alley.

Pair it with Islands of Adventure across the lagoon and treat the two as one two-day unit — with a park-to-park ticket, the Hogwarts Express between them is itself an attraction and works differently in each direction.

Rope drop

Diagon Alley, immediately. Enter through the London waterfront and go through the brick wall — the reveal is the single best moment Universal has, and it's worth arriving early purely to experience it without a crowd.

Then Escape from Gringotts before the queue builds.

After that, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit or Revenge of the Mummy depending on your thrill appetite. The Mummy is an indoor coaster and considerably better than its exterior suggests.

The motion sickness warning

Take this one seriously. USF leans heavily on simulator rides — screens, hydraulics, and no real motion through space. Gringotts, Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem, Transformers and The Simpsons Ride are all in that category, and The Simpsons Ride in particular is notorious.

If anyone in the party is prone to motion sickness, space these out across the day, sit at the back where offered, and don't do three in a row before lunch.

Express Pass

Universal's system is different from Disney's: Express Pass is an unlimited walk-up skip, not a booking system. No planning, no return times — you just use the Express queue whenever you like.

  • It's free and unlimited if you're staying at Hard Rock, Portofino Bay or Royal Pacific. That perk alone often justifies the hotel price for a family.
  • Otherwise it's expensive — over $100 a head at peak.
  • Single rider queues exist on several rides here and are free. Use them.
  • Note that Hagrid's over at Islands of Adventure has never been on Express, so don't buy it expecting to skip that one.

When it storms

Better than most. Most of the headline attractions are indoors, and Diagon Alley itself is largely covered by the buildings — the alley is narrow and the overhangs are generous. The Leaky Cauldron is the natural place to sit it out.

Food

  • The Leaky Cauldron (Diagon Alley) — genuinely good British pub food, done properly, in an outstanding room. The best themed restaurant in Orlando.
  • Butterbeer — get the frozen one in August, not the cold or hot. It's very sweet and one between two is plenty.
  • Florean Fortescue's ice cream parlour, also in Diagon Alley.
  • Toothsome Chocolate Emporium is in CityWalk rather than the park, but it's the one worth booking.

Don't miss

The Hogwarts Express to Hogsmeade. It requires a park-to-park ticket, takes about four minutes, and the journey is genuinely different in each direction — so ride it both ways at some point across your two days. The queue is part of it.
