EPCOT

Two parks in one — a thin ride park and the best eating in Orlando

3 min read · Checked Mon 27 Jul
  • Ride the front half in the morning, eat and drink your way round World Showcase in the evening.
  • Remy and Frozen are the two queues that hurt. Book or rope drop both.
  • World Showcase doesn't open until 11am. Don't arrive at 10 expecting it.

The shape of the day

EPCOT is genuinely two parks stitched together, and they run on different clocks.

The front half (World Celebration, Discovery, Nature) is the rides. World Showcase is the eleven country pavilions round the lagoon, and it's where you eat, drink and walk. It's also the best evening in Orlando for adults.

Crucially, World Showcase doesn't open until 11am even when the park opens at 9. Plan the rides first — you have no choice.

Rope drop

  1. Remy's Ratatouille Adventure (France pavilion — you can walk there before World Showcase opens, via the International Gateway or the pathway round). Worst wait in the park.
  2. Frozen Ever After (Norway). Second worst, and a very short ride for the queue.
  3. Test Track if it's running — it goes down often.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is a virtual queue or a Single Pass. Join the 7am drop from bed. It's the best ride Disney has built in years and it's worth the effort.

Lightning Lane

Multi Pass is usually worth it here, but less emphatically than Magic Kingdom — there simply aren't as many rides. Book Remy and Frozen first; those two are 90% of the value. Soarin' and Spaceship Earth rarely need it.

Eating — the actual reason to come

EPCOT has the best food in Orlando by a distance, and much of it needs no reservation. The correct way to do World Showcase is to eat one small thing in each country and keep walking.

Reliable stops:

  • Mexico — the tequila bar inside the pyramid, dark and cool and a good storm shelter.
  • Germany — pretzel, beer.
  • Japan — the food court upstairs is quietly one of the best-value meals in Disney.
  • France — the bakery. Whatever's in the window.
  • UK — mostly for the amusement of seeing what Americans think a pub is, but the fish and chips is fine and the garden is a nice place to sit.

For sit-down: Space 220 is the famous one (book at 60 days, exactly), Le Cellier in Canada is a proper steakhouse, and Via Napoli in Italy does the best pizza on Disney property.

If you're there during the Food & Wine Festival (late August onwards), the whole lagoon fills with tasting kiosks and the park changes character entirely. Check the dates.

When it storms

EPCOT is more exposed than Magic Kingdom — World Showcase is a mile-long outdoor loop with limited shelter. The pavilions themselves are the answer: Mexico and Norway are fully indoors, the American Adventure is a 30-minute air-conditioned show, and Spaceship Earth is a long indoor ride that almost never has a queue.

The evening

Stay for the fireworks over the lagoon. Watch them from anywhere on the World Showcase loop with a drink in hand — the view is good from most of it, and unlike Magic Kingdom you don't need to stake out a spot an hour ahead.

The International Gateway exit (between UK and France) is the quicker way out if you're on a Skyliner or boat resort.
